Hiroshi Nakahara, a 48-year-old businessman, travels to Kyoto on a routine work trip. By chance, he boards the wrong train—one heading in the opposite direction—and finds himself in Kurayoshi, Tottori, the town where he spent his youth.
Standing before his late mother’s grave, Hiroshi is suddenly transported back to the summer of his fourteenth year. Retaining all the memories of his adult life, he relives his days as a middle school student, acutely aware that this was the year his father mysteriously disappeared.
Determined to prevent that loss, Hiroshi begins to intervene—carefully navigating the fragile boundaries between past and present. As he attempts to alter fate, he is drawn into a deeper understanding of his father, his family, and himself. What unfolds is not only the revelation of long-buried family secrets, but also a profound encounter with the emotional complexities that only adulthood can truly grasp.
When Hiroshi returns to the present, he is no longer the same man. The life he once took for granted—his wife, his children, his quiet happiness—emerges not as something given, but as something consciously chosen.
A Distant Neighborhood is a tender and introspective journey across time, memory, and reconciliation—an exploration of what it means to understand those we love, before it is too late.
