My Story

Yumin Zhang (Director) graduated from Boston University with a bachelor’s degree in Film and
Television, she has worked as an experienced producer but recently stepped into the ranks of directing. With curiosity and enthusiasm, she further her studies of film at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Being a director, she pursues the ultimate aesthetic control, especially with the smallest details. Highly sensitive to the relationship between emotions and colors narrated by stories, she is keen on exploring the beauty of atmosphere in the film, creating visual impact.

Director Statement

I am an artist who requires 100% control of my works. Take ‘One afternoon’ as an example; I took the lead from the writing of the script in the early stage to the editing and color mixing in the later stage. Over a few months, I’ve worked with many great artists for this film, and these creative artists have many ideas about any work, including my work. Therefore, in the production process of ‘One Afternoon,’ as a new director, I have been through many headaches caused by other people’s opinions, and even questioning myself after provoking a deliberate confrontation between the voice of the outside world and the voice of my innermost being. My solid determination wins. The whole film ‘One Afternoon’ was made entirely according to my opinion.

In the middle stages of the plot, I added some plots detached from realism, symbolizing my beautiful vision for the utopia and non-realism world. A lot of smoke used to heighten the atmosphere of this fantasy. But at the end of the film, it still returns to reality. Because of the social status and identity of the protagonist and antagonist, they are like two parallel lines that will never intersect. Even if they get touched by a moment of beauty from each other, all the beauty will stay in that afternoon. Back to reality, everything is still cold and dark.

In this tragic drama, I did not adopt the cool tone of lighting and color-grading suggested by most people. I emphasized a warm tone throughout the film because the story is full of cold reality, but I hope the audience could feel a little longing for myself and the character for truth, goodness, and beauty.
