Director Statement

Almost one in three Americans are touched by family caregiving. The work family members do to care for their unwell loved ones is worth half a trillion dollars annually. And a major part of this community is military caregivers.
The caregiving journey for military families starts earlier and lasts longer than for most. In service for their loved ones, military caregivers lose on average, almost $200,000 in wages over their lifetimes.
My father and mother came from military families. They never talked about it, or how they cared for their siblings who served. I only learned details of their service a half-century later. But I did remember my grandfather’s pride.
He showed me a framed picture each time I visited, from when I was nine until he died. America. It was his new home. That picture was probably given to longshoremen as they left the shipyard where they built Liberty Ships. He held it close. Symbols of American manufacturing and gracious might.
When Grandpa died, I asked for one thing–his flyer. He framed and put it on a shelf. The top shelf. The corner note he typed and Scotch-taped reminds me of the history he gave me, and all of us. June 20, 1945. A hopeful and caring time.
So this documentary is for that generation and those before and after. This is for those who cared for our veterans. For our loved ones. The spouses, partners, children, family and friends–the ones who parachute in to care. As they used to say, “See the parachutes opening. They’re coming to safeguard those on the ground.”
