Director Statement

Hapa is an outlet for the people like myself – mixed-race folks and Asian-Americans – who at any point in their lives have faced the challenges of being accepted by their community or struggled with feelings that they don’t belong in it. The show highlights these issues and is a celebration of heritage and culture.

This project is a result of being the change I wanted to see in representation of mixed-race Asian-Americans and multicultural peoples. It’s a celebration of heritage and culture. We sought to tell a unique story that Asian-Americans and mixed-race people could relate to and that audiences outside of those communities could enjoy and learn from. We feature a 100% Asian cast who have had roles in projects such as FX and Marvel’s Legion, and the Variety-covered independent film Summertime Dropouts.

Hi I'm Takaya, writer and director of Hapa.
