Director Statement

“A Plus” emerges from a personal and cultural crisis – the intense pressure of academic success in Asian communities, a pressure I’ve intimately known. Inspired by a real-life incident of a friend driven to desperate measures by family expectations, this film delves into the moral and emotional turmoil faced by Siqi, our protagonist, during a pivotal exam. Through a narrative that oscillates between her present challenges and past influences, especially her interactions with her mother, “A Plus” captures the conflict between societal expectations and personal integrity. This film is not just a story, but a question about the necessity of the burdens we place on our youth, inviting the audience to reflect on the deeper implications of our relentless pursuit of excellence.
